Teams Device Configuration

Most issues that are perceived to be physical issues like mics not working, or headphones not outputting sound are usually due to device options in certain software or settings. This can be due to many reasons, from Teams updating and causing it to forget your device preferences, all the way to Windows disconnecting devices that they believe no one is using.

  1. If your device isn’t working on Teams, the first thing you should do is go to the top right-hand corner and click on the three dotted lines.
  2. Next you need to click settings on the menu that drops down.

  1. Next, the Settings menu should appear on your screen, and it will have you in the General tab on the left. You need to look at the tab on the left for the Settings sub-menu called Devices and click on it.
  2. After that check if your audio device that is listed is the one you want to use. For example, if it says the current device is Laptop Speakers for the audio device, and yet you want to communicate to people through your headphones, click on the dropdown menu for Audio devices and select the device you currently want to use.
  3. To check if you are now using the correct device for audio, click on the Make a test call option at the bottom of the page. This will allow you to both test your mic (as you will receive the audio from your mic through your own headphones), as well as also testing your headphones to see if you have chosen the right device.

  1. If you can now hear yourself, but your audio is too quiet or too loud, click on the Speaker icon at the bottom right of your screen.
  2. Once you click that, an audio slider should appear which allows you to increase or decrease your volume to your preferred level.

  1. If your device didn’t show up in Microsoft Teams’ Device Settings menu, then click the ‘Type here to search’ box at the bottom left of your screen and type in ‘Bluetooth’.
  2. Then click on the ‘Bluetooth and other devices settings’ to take you to the Window’s settings tab.

  1. Once on the Bluetooth Settings page, check to see if the device you want to use is connected to the computer. You can do this by clicking on the device which you want to use and seeing the headphones’ current status.
  2. If it says ‘Paired’ for the device, you want to use press connect and then wait for it to connect. If the device you want to use connects, repeat from Step 1 to Step 5 in order to set it up within Microsoft Teams.
