This guide demonstrates how to create and edit a table of contents

  • Highlight the headings you want to be included in the table of contents
  • Select an appropriate heading style from the ‘Styles’ menu

  • Your headings should now look similar to this, with a small tab on the left hand side to expand/collapse the headings

  • To insert these headings into a table of contents, navigate to the ‘References’ tab at the top of your screen

  • Select the ‘Table of Contents’ button on the left hand side and select the first option to create a basic table of contents

This will then create a table of contents with the headings included in your document:

  • If you need to indent your table of contents to include subheadings, you can use different heading styles to do this. Highlight the heading you need to indent and select ‘heading 2’ in the headings menu. This should change the selected heading to a smaller font:

  • Now when you create a new table of contents, it will indent heading 2 beneath heading 1:

  • If you need to indent any further, you will need to continue along the same method e.g. if you need to indent two subcategories under heading 1, you would use heading 2 and heading 3
